I sent a message to someone, but they say
my message never showed up, why?
We would like to point
you to the following facts first:
- AZC mail servers run the best Internet mail system
software qmail
- as pointed out in
"What are the most common reasons for using
qmail?" qmail by design won't lose email.
If an address is deliverable, it will send the
message. BUT, whether an address is always deliverable
is not guaranteed. A lot sites on the Internet
(especially Microsoft shops) have misconfigured or
buggy mail server software, see e.g. the following
official Microsoft bug repot:
XFOR: SMTP Service Doesn't Retry on 4xx Errors
qmail, on the other hand, has none of the mentioned bugs. In fact, since the
version 1.03 released in November 1998, it has been so reliable that no
fixes are necessary for regular operation and security issues so far.
Quite a few companies
that went IPO in the past and received billion dollar
market caps use qmail as well.
Examples: Critical Path, Yahoo!Mail, and even
Microsoft's hotmail uses qmail for outgoing
delivery. Please see qmail:
Second Most popular MTA on the Internet for
more details.
On the other hand, you can't trust
end users's conjectures regarding the possible causes
of the email difficulties, because of:
- malfunctioning mail servers
- accidental deletion of your message by the recipient
- mistaken blocking or deletion by an account user's filtering service. In such
cases, your messages may be delivered successfully,
but your recipients will never see them, and
most likely won't be aware of your messages's
existance at all.
The best way to deduce the reason for "non delivery" is to double check
- when you sent the message
- who didn't get your message
While we can help you in receiving a message, once the message
is sent, it is up to the recipients ISP to make sure the message arrives safely.
